STOP — if you see
- Bulk cash for high-value items — or purchases split to stay under S$20,000
- Rushed buying — indifferent to price, product or fit
- Unusually young buyer with cash inconsistent with apparent means
- Reluctance to give ID or explain the purpose of purchase
- Remote direction — buyer following a handler's instructions by phone/chat
- Value-storage questions — resale, returns, melting, "how easily can I sell this back?"
DO — the four steps
- Stay calm and professional — serve normally; do not alert or accuse
- Complete CDD as required — ID & particulars for cash ≥ S$20,000 (and any transaction your IPPC flags)
- Escalate internally — notify your compliance officer / manager after the customer leaves where possible
- Never tip off — disclosing that a report may be filed is itself an offence
Say this"For purchases at this amount, our licence requires me to take down some particulars — it's the same at every registered dealer in Singapore. May I see your ID, please?"
